Hi allA colleague at work brought this to my attention the other day, she said her laptop was constantly switching off and on while she was using it, and even if she left it, it would still go off, come back on, go off, come back on etc. My first thought was thatit was an issue with the power switch, so I asked her to bring it in.
I ruled that out when I realised that the laptop was not in fact turning off, but was going into sleep mode, waking itself back up, going to sleep again etc.So, I looked at all of the power settings, and ensured that for all power plans it was not to go to sleep, either on battery or while plugged in. I have also set the 'Unattended sleep timeout' to be 5 hours (I have tried various different times for this,to no effect), the hard disk is set to never turn off, as is the display.
All of this made no difference.I decided to look in the BIOS to see if there was anything related to sleep settings, but I found nothing in there.I thought that the following solution looked promising, since it worked for a lot of other people who had a similar (but not quite as bad) issue, yet this too has had no impact:1. Click on the windows icon2. Type regedit3. Right-click on regedit icon, click Run as administrator4.
Go to HKEYLOCALMACHINESYSTEMCurrentControlSetControlPowerPowerSettings238C9FA8-0AAD-41ED-83F4-97BE242C8F207bc4a2f9-d8fc-4469-b07b-33eb785aaca05. Double click on Attributes6. Enter number 2.7.

Go to Advanced power settings (click on Windows button, write power options, click on Power Options, in the selected plan click on the Change plan settings, click on the Change advanced power settings).8. Click on the Change settings that are currently unavailable9. Click Sleep, then System unattended sleep timeout, then change these settings from 2 Minutes to 20 for example.I've gone around in circles with this one for 2 days, and it is driving me around the twist. It can even be impossible to try and work on it since it can go to sleep, then wake up, and before you have a chance to put the passwordin to log on again, it has once again gone to sleep. The only conclusion that I can come to is that the laptop has narcolepsy.A little information about the laptop:Lenovo G580It was running Windows 8 before upgrading to Windows 10 HomeCPU is an Intel Pentium B9604GB RAMIf you would like any further information then please let me know, and thanks in advance for any help that can be offered.

Microsoft Windows provides Power Options that enable you to adjust the sleep mode and screen display to suit your workflow. If your computer fails to wake up quickly from sleep mode, or the display turns off, changing the Power Options will avoid these interruptions. Windows includes a list of time settings, ranging from five minutes to Never, to activate the sleep mode.
Selecting “Never” will turn off your computer’s sleep mode and keep your current work visible on the screen and ready for your next task. Tips. For a keyboard shortcut to Power Options, press “Windows-X” to open the Quick Link menu and then select “Power Options” to open this window. The Power Options window enables you to define the power buttons or the power plans.
Click “Choose What the Power Buttons Do” in the sidebar and select options for the Power button and Sleep button, such as Shut Down or Do Nothing. Click “Create a Power Plan” in the sidebar and select “Balanced (Recommended),” “Power Saver” or “High Performance.” These three options will open the Edit Plan Settings window.

To prevent Windows from going into standby / sleep after certain period of inactivity you can use free utility developed by David Anson called Insomnia. You can download from or from author's.There is no need to install anything, simply unzip the file and run either 32 or 64 bit version depending on your Operating System. While utility is running computer will not go into sleep mode because of inactivity. This, however, doesn't prevent computer from going to sleep if user presses sleep button in the start menu or on the keyboard.
